Absent without Leave is an award-winning documentary by Malaysia-born, Taiwan-based filmmaker Lau Kek-Huat. It retraces the story of Lau’s grandfather, a member of the Malaya Communist Party whose identity was hidden from his family. The documentary retraces through the form of a dialogue between Lau and the ghost of his grandfather, the fight against the Japanese invaders and the fight for independence against the British led by the MCP. Through the words of those who led the same battle as his grandfather, Lau puts together the pieces of this forgotten history to ask himself what it means to be a Malaysian today.

“Those in deep love with this land were deported, those in deep love with each other were departed. This is a film about their lost of love.”

This story begins with a man’s portrait hanging in my family home in Malaysia. The identity of this man has always been a taboo, until one day I discovered it was my grandfather, whose identity was hidden from me because he was a member of the Malaysian Communist Party. This is a journey to discover the secret history of my country through the eyes of my grandfather.
